Don't know why the thumbnail is blacked out but don't let that keep you from clicking on the link to watch the HUGE waves that are about to roll through the mouth of Humboldt Bay, here in Eureka, CA.! It looks like a storm is coming in but I'm still going out there to watch the show! HUGE! Standing on the jetty is way to dangerous but standing on the high dunes beside the jetty is utterly breathtaking. Some of the waves hit the rocks on the north jetty and when they do it literally shakes the ground and there's a really loud splash that comes over the rocks and then throw's a lot of salt spray into the air that hit's you in the face even if you're standing 50 or 60 feet back and up on the high dunes. AMAZING and SCARY and it makes you feel so alive to be there and experience the rush!

Slow to get movin today! I think I got more of a work out than I realized fighting the tide yesterday! I really wanted to catch more waves but looking back now I realize that I probably got what I needed in the work out of fighting the tide to get back to shore and also in learning how to read the water and making sure that I'm doing what I can to work with the tide yet keeping it from taking me where I know I don't need to be like too close to the waves that are breaking and pushing towards the rocks. When I look at it that way I realize that I received waay more knowledge that will help me to get out in the big surf on the coast than I would have gotten if I would've just gotten a few good rides on the small breakers inside the bay. Today I find myself thinking about how the water moved and how I reacted to it, right or wrong, and what I need to do next time I find myself in that position. Also, I see how I can use this knowledge to overcome the obstacles that prevented me from getting out to the line up the last time I tried to surf the north jetty. Another thing, fighting the tide like that and being able to get back to shore without panicking and knowing when to rest for a second or when is the best time to swap hands with the paddle and steer my board into the waves or out of the waves is invaluable to survival in the sport of standup paddle surfing. Not to mention the fact that I am really getting into the kind of shape that I need to be in if I want to pursue the sport and not end up drowning or getting hurt seriously. As much as working out in the gym helps it is definitely not the same as getting out there and working out in the surf. You get a unique work out when you're out there in it, using muscle groups to help you balance, paddle forward, turn or slow down, and most of all the mental capacity to do it all without panicking and being able to really focus your entire self on the task at hand! I love sup so much! It really is shaping me and molding me in so many ways, both in and out of the water!

Another beautiful day for SUP on beautiful Humboldt Bay in Eureka, CA.! I think I'll go out and enjoy some sup magic around Woodley Island Marina and the Boardwalk in Old Town Eureka. Humboldt Bay and standup paddle boarding are a perfect match!

Hey Matt! Welcome to Lost Coast SUP Group! Great to have another member, especially a fellow Northern California resident! We need to spread the SUP love in Humboldt County and elsewhere as we can! Stoked to have another SUPer in the group that lives close enough to connect with to paddle in our neck of the woods! SWEET!
