SUP 4 Cancer is an annual multi-day event in Hood River, Oregon that raises funds for Athletes for Cancer's SUP & Surf Retreats for Young Adult Cancer Survivors.
Athletes for Cancer began Adventure Retreats for young adults transitioning through life after cancer after recognizing a void in support offerings for the 18-40 age range of survivors. We are excited to announce our first series of SUP & Surf Camps will run in Maui in April, 2011.
Retreats take survivors on an experience of a lifetime that challenge and inspire each person involved. With a team of professional instructors, survivors are introduced to surfing and standup paddling to overcome physical or psychological limitations as they face life after cancer. Retreats combine safe, supportive instruction with culture and adventure for a rich experience each survivor can share with one another.
SUP 4 Cancer is an incredible event and cause that you won't want to miss. The vibe of this event is like no other and the cause is so close to what we do every day -- share our passion and love for the water with others.
We are looking for SUP 4 Cancer event and camp volunteers, plus participants who want to race for the cause!
Just wanted to give you all a head's up that we have five spots left on our Surf/SUP YA Survivorship Retreat in Maui, Hawaii, April 8-14. So, spread the word! These retreats are sponsored by Athletes for Cancer via our SUP 4 Cancer event and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation, so all costs of the camp are covered except for airfare to Maui.
Our Surf/Standup Paddle camp is part instruction and part adventure -- introducing campers to the healing power of the ocean in a safe and supportive environment. Survivors ages 18-40 are eligible to apply. Read more on our camps on the Athletes for Cancer website: http://www.athletes4cancer.org/programs.cfm
The Maui camp will take place on the south shore of the garden isle, based out of Camp Oluwalu. With professional instructors right at our side, survivors will learn how to paddle out into small friendly waves, gradually progressing to stand up on the board. In the afternoons, we'll head out on flatwater with standup paddleboards, learning paddle strokes, balance, and turns while gliding over tropical clear green water.
Survivors must submit an application via http://www.athletes4cancer.org/programs.cfm plus have their doctor/oncologist complete and submit a medical app.
