First SUP board
Discussion started by Amanda Young , on 14 February 01:18 AM
I am looking to purchase a sup board and I need some advice. I know there are all around boards and touring/racing boards. I am just starting out, but would like a board that I could potentially use in a race if I get the courage to sign up for one this summer. Would I be okay in a race with an all around board? Would like to get a good board thats not terribly expensive to start out.

Thanks for the advice
Amanda

My shop is one of on every board. custom fit! I have not shipped any boards, but it is not that complicated. More complex is to find out size, ability, and typical venue. After that, fun with graphics. I have an artist who painted a beach scene on a board for me. The other side is a sleeping dragon. It looks really cool through the glass. Maybe I ll put the picture up next week. It got a lot of comments at Battle of the Bay. But, sliding through glassy water, it really showed off its stuff. Cant wait try try it in a race. spring is springing!

Good advice from Jack!
Since you've already learned how to SUP - and would like to try racing - sounds like a 12'6" board will serve you best and keep you happy for a while (side note: there are sometimes surfboard/all around board categories in some races). Race or touring style (yes, on the pointy nose :)). Hopefully you can test some out this spring! Don't know of any stores in Penn, but if your willing take a road trip, here are a few great stores where you could test out boards and talk to the knowledgeable people there...

- Downunder Kayak & SUP & Surf in Westport & Rowaton, CT (owner Kim B.) www.downunderct.com
- DelMarVa Board Sports in Fenwick Island, DE (owner Janis M) www.delmarvaboardsportadventures.com
- Surfari Stand Up Paddle & Surf in Manchester-by-the-sea, MA (owner Christian D) www.standuppaddlesurfari.com
- Nalu Surf & Sport in Rocky River , OH (owner Bill C.) www.nalusup.com

You mentioned you might visit California ...
West Coast Paddle Sports in San Diego, CA (ask for owner Bob L) www.westcoastpaddlesports.com

Happy shopping!

Thanks for the information! I wish I lived closer to, because I would love for you to make me a board. Do you ever ship to the East Coast? Do you recommend a specific brand for a stock (12 6)displacement board(pointy nose) board?

An all around, round nose surf/glide board is a bad idea unless you just want to get up and out on the water. It sounds like you are athletic and want to do this seriously. I make "fast cruisers" that are designed to be more stable than a race.board and way faster than an all around board. this kind of board called "trainers" or workout or whatever are great to take you from beginner to intermediate quickly. Get a stock (12 6)displacement board(pointy nose) and find places where people train. You will be racing by this summer. Wish you were closer, I take a deposit, give you a loaner, and make you a board for $ 1400. That gives you a month to get going on a wider board. By the time the board is ready for.the.rider, the rider is ready for the board. One of these boards should make you happy for several seasons and be a desirable trade when you buy a race board.
