Reservoir board?
Discussion started by Craig Anderson , on 17 July 12:54 AM
I'm starting out with an NRS Big Earl iSUP, most of my paddling will be on reservoirs in Colorado. I'm a beginner, but I'm not happy with the upwind performance of the Big Earl. I won't be buying soon, but I'm curious what boards are better for cruising on windy reservoirs? I know I will want a faster cruising/racing board as my skills improve.

It sounds like you might want to invest in a displacement edge board. they carve through the water rather than ride on top like surf style boards. And since you're not surfing, there's really no reason to get it. I'd say either go for a racing board if racing is your thing, but if you just want a stable board of a racing STYLE, the riviera VOYAGER is a sweet option. and it's really cheap (only $1100).

check out my review of it for more information. I've been on it multiple times and it's a really fun and fast board, but also really stable/

I was assuming my next board will not be an inflatable. The Big Earl iSUP has been a good beginner board and will be my goto board when there is any danger of hitting rocks. The only other paddler I know of in Pueblo has the bigger NRS iSUP. I will be looking for meetups in Colorado I can get to for trying out some other boards. When I was younger, I did a log of flatwater kayaking and my favorite kayak was an Old Town Downriver, fairly long and unstable.

Will you want to stay with an inflatable? The longer the board the faster the board, but the longer the board the more unstable as well. You'll probably need to try out as may as possible. Go to all the demos you can and really feel them out. There can be big differences among the boards! It will most likely be easier to go up wind on a non inflatable.
