Recovery

I am looking for the best recovery for my stroke. Should it be close to the water and out to the side or straight up and back to the entry?

either way, feather it (turning the blade's poweface face flat to the water) to cut your wind resistence, even if there's no wind.

in rough water you can slice the blade through the water parallel to the board back to the catch, thus by keeping it in the water, you'll be more stable. a technique coming from whitewater kayaking.

I think straight up feels the best as well, it also looks faster!

Annabel (coming second to Candice in everything) also says straight up.

Not sure where I saw it but someone mentioned that the top women have great technique as they (generally) can't muscle through it like the guys.

Dave Kalama reckons that you should be as close to the water as possible, any higher is wasted energy

Candice says straight up, straight forward, and back in the water: that's the shortest path to reentry.

I think it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. The stroke seems to change as people sprint vs going for a steady distance glide, etc. The elite use many different strokes and recovery techniques. I was just recently speaking with Andre Niemeyer about this...maybe we can get him to chime in! ;-)

I am not an expert, but the recovery with the least amount of paddle out of the water time makes sense.
