Race Start Techniques
Discussion started by Jonette Albers , on 15 June 05:31 AM
So far local flatwater races have lined entrants up in the water and we take off from a standing start. Are there any special techniques for getting up to speed quickly that people have tried? At one race it looked like a guy choked down on the paddle for the first few strokes and then lengthened his grip as he picked up speed over the next two or three strokes.

Good to know, I have my first race later this month. I've never even witnessed a race in person - I'm looking for lots of tips too!! :)

In a race the start really does set the pace for what place you will be in for the rest of the race.

Check out Conners start in this video. He is on the board and paddling before anyone else, he also uses a lower stroke for a good 10 plus strokes
