Im not sure they are doing demos yet. They showed the drives, but no rides this summer. I rode a competing product called Lightning Drive. It was a fun novelty, but not the lifestyle, as you say. For years there has been a gas drive for a board. I saw a guy doing about 15 mph. So what? We have lots of skiiers and wave runners if you wanna go fast on power.
For me, the sport is about the glide. Thats why my boards slither through the water almost without a ripple. Rapier nose.

Hey Alex,
In this video, I'm riding a wavejet at the BOP this year:

Basically, the wavejet is a dual prop electric propulsion pod that snaps into the board, flush. You get 25lbs of thrust which moves you at about 7mph for around an hour. The extra power and speed means that you don't have to paddle back out to the break after riding a wave, it's like a chair lift. On the river, you can put in and take out at the same spot because you can ride upstream over the rapids and float back down, as we did at the TEVA mountain games this summer.

The other thing about it is that it's just a lot of fun. I just came back from the Triple Crown a few weeks ago where we were riding a wavejet powered Big EZ, at an undisclosed break on the North Shore, and I was charging much bigger waves than I would normally have. The extra power and speed allowed me to outrun the crashing lip of some really heavy waves and make the drop before I got swallowed up. It gave me extra confidence to have a little power under my feet and I scored some of the best rides I've ever had in my life.

Does it fit the lifestyle? If the lifestyle is about having a good time and experiencing a few more thrills that you may not have had before, then yeah, I guess it does. On the other hand, it's been really useful to get people out and back into the water that have suffered physical disabilities and thought that they may have lost some of their connection to the water. It really just depends on what you do with it. I can imagine that there are some less than noble ways of using the extra power, but I haven't had any problems with that yet.

Alex,
I would contact Todd Caranto with Pau Hana SUP. He works closely with wavejet. One of their team riders is also World Freestyle Kayak Champion and GoPro athlete Nick Troutman. Read and watch here to learn more!
