I want to try and come up with 101 of the top places to Stand Up Paddle. I will add on the first and as you come up with places you want to or have paddled, add them on!
In 2011 the CCBC ohana raised $150,000 in support of the kids staying at Christopher's Haven while they underwent treatment for cancer. To date we’ve raised in excess of $250,000 for the kids, enough to support over 40 families from all over the country and the world while the kids are here for their typical 6-8 week treatment. This year is our 5th anniversary and we hope to build on that success and support many more families. When you hear about the parents of a young girl from South Africa being told to prepare for her funeral by her Doctors at home coming to Boston and going home disease free, you know you’ve helped make a difference.
The CCBC is about building a community that cares. To that end we also with the help of our sponsors, Naish, Kialoa and MTI gave Community Boating in Boston (the site of our Charles River race) 6 full sets of SUP gear, boards, paddles, and PFDs to kick off their SUP program. Ten’s of thousands of inner city kids have benefited from the programs offered by Community Boating. I can’t wait for the 1st grom from this program to kick my butt in a race...:)
2012 CCBC Event Series
Starting off June 9 with the Wellfleet SUPathalon and SUP Surf contest. A BOP style event with a daylong beach party and Surf contest to boot...classic Cape Cod beach bonfires, sand in your suits and smiles on faces.
July 21....The Challenge on the Charles.. 4 mile circuit race around the historic basin of the Charles River in downtown Boston. Racing through the lagoons next to the Hatch Shell of Boston Pops fame and out into the basin amongst the sailboats from Community Boating, a venerable Boston landmark that has been teaching inner city kids to sail since 1936. Followed with a big party on the docks at Community Boating.
August 25....the BIG Kahuna...The Cape Cod Bay Challenge...34 miles across Cape Cod Bay from Plymouth to Wellfleet. This is the 5 year anniversary of the CCBC...planning for an epic event. This is our 2nd year landing in Wellfleet and we'll be building on the great success of last years event. It promises to be one of the biggest and best events of the season. It doesn't get much better than stepping ashore after 34 miles with the awesome feeling of support the CCBC family brings with it. We'll have board demos, and vendor tents, good food, music and the all important Wachusett brews to help make a great day. All on a great family friendly spot under the big tent right across from the beach.
We finish off the season with a bit of craziness. The Late Summa Paddle in Humarock on Sept 22. This is a costume required crazy SUP cruise. We finish with...you guessed it...a party. Last year a very motley crew of about 60 bizarre folks paddled to Wachusett Treasure Island and discovered a treasure cooler full of booty. Then paddled back to some great food, more cold brews, and some steel band reggae after a beautiful afternoon on the water.
All of the events will have great raffles and auctions for some awesome gear....we'll raffle a Naish Glide, Auction a Coreban Alpha 14, a custom Vec and Twin Lights surf SUP, lots of Maui Jims sunglasses, Ke Nalu paddles, Tevas, MTI PFD's, Kialoa paddles, Cape Cod Beach Chairs, artwork....and way, way more than I feel like typing here.
All the events have paddler t-shirts and for the paddlers of the Cape Cod Bay Challenge, a Hepi Maxwell CCBC Hei Matau and a swag bag full of goodies.
Check out http://www.capecodbaychallenge.org ...the new website and event info will be up soon but you can check out some of our previous events in the meantime. Come join us for the challenge, join the growing CCBC ohana, and help support the kids as they go through their own much greater challenge.
See you on the water.
Certification as Standup Paddleboard Instructor. The number one goal of the “ASI” Certification Course is to provide for the overall safety of the Standup Paddleboard Beginner through a Standard of Instruction based on overall water safety and sound SUP teaching techniques. Any sport that involves open water conditions is inherently dangerous. A Standard of SUP Instruction Manual and Practical Teaching Techniques will provide the Certified “ASi” Instructor the ability to provide the best learning conditions for all beginner SUP paddlers.
The Academy of Standup Paddleboard Instructors will learn all aspects of Basic SUP Instruction through classroom instruction and practical learning techniques.

Alex Linnell, who will be the first person to ever stand-up paddle (SUP) the length of the Mississippi River, begins his trip June 1, 2011 from the headwaters at Lake Itasca in Minnesota. Best estimates make this trip between 60 and 90 days long (duration depending on water depth and current speed following the spring flooding). While the actual length of the Mississippi River differs depending on who you ask, most sites typically put the distance around 2350-2400 miles. The current SUP distance record is held by Tom Jones, who paddled 1507 miles from Key West to NYC in the summer of 2010.
